Life & Health Protection

Life Insurance (Life Assurance)

Life and Protection Insurance policies are important as they can protect you and your family from the devastating financial consequences of death. Life Insurance (sometimes known as Life Assurance) provides some financial security for people who depend on you, should you die. You can have mortgage protection insurance which guarantees, subject to all mortgage payments being up to date, to clear the balance of your mortgage should one you or one of the policyholders  die during the term.

Typical uses:

  • Clear a mortgage or debts
  • Provide a lump sum for family/living costs
  • Leave a legacy or cover funeral expenses

Whole of Life Insurance

Whole of life insurance is a life insurance policy that guarantees your family or chosen beneficiary gets a payout when you die. It is a cover for your peace of mind that your loved ones will have financial security no matter what. Some clients use it to plan and cover the cost of the inheritance tax liability on their estate when they die.

Unlike term life insurance which has an end date, whole of life only ends when you die. The payout is guaranteed which is why the premiums are higher than standard term assurance, as it reflects the guarantee.

Income Protection

Income Protection Insurance is designed to pay you a regular tax-free monthly income if you become unable to work due to illness or injury.

Key points:

  • Replaces a portion of your income,up to 65%, until you return to work or the policy ends
  • Can complement sick pay from your employer
  • Waiting/deferred periods can be tailored to reduce cost
  • Can include fracture cover.

Critical Illness Cover

Critical Illness Insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum on the diagnosis of certain life-threatening or debilitating (but not fatal) conditions, including heart attack, stroke, cancer and major organ transplants. This list will vary depending on the insurer, as will the exclusions for making a claim.

How it helps:

  • Fund treatment, adapt your home, reduce work hours or clear debt
  • Often taken alongside life insurance or as a family policy

Family Income Benefit

Family income benefit is a type of life insurance that provides a regular income for your loved ones if you die during the term of the plan. There is no cash in value, so if you stop making payments, your cover will end. Most families rely on at least one regular monthly salary to cover their household spending.

Why choose it:

  • Pays an income (not a lump sum), matching monthly household needs
  • Can be a cost-effective way to protect dependants

Relevant Life Insurance (for Businesses)

This is a type of policy that a business can take out to provide life insurance for an individual employee, as it is a cost-effective way to provide life insurance with terminal illness cover benefits for employees. There are many instances of director-level employees taking out cover for themselves, which can be very tax advantageous. HMRC currently view these payments as an allowable expense by HMRC all premiums and paid benefits qualify for full income tax relief, national insurance relief and corporation tax relief. You should always speak to your qualified adviser or accountant to see if this would be a good option for your company.
Typical uses:

  • Directors or key employees needing personal life cover paid by the company
  • Potential tax efficiencies versus personal policies (seek professional tax advice)

Landlord Insurance

Landlord insurance is cover that protects landlords from risks associated with their rental property. It usually includes buildings and contents insurance, but can also include landlord-specific covers such as property owners’ liability, loss of rent, and tenant default insurance.
